Howard's father was Benjamin Fulford Underhill and his mother was Florence Margaret Emberton. He had two brothers and a sister, named Fulford, William and Gladys.  He was the second youngest of the four children. He had two half-brothers named Kenneth and Edwin.  He died at the age of 62 in January 1986 in Brimstage.²
