Francis' father was James Tomlinson and his mother was Mary Goller (or Geller). His paternal grandparents were Richard Tomlinson and Alice Glover. He had four brothers and two sisters, named George, John, Albert, Peter, Mary? and Elizabeth. He was the fourth oldest of the seven children. He died at the age of 46 on August 9th, 1885 in Bolton.²
