Thomas was born in 1806 in Whitefield and his baptism took place on March 16th, 1806 at St. Mary-the-Virgin (Prestwich).1 2  Thomas' father was James Taylor and his mother was Rachel Madther.  His maternal grandparents were Robert Madther and Rachel Ogden. He had four brothers and two sisters, named William, John, Peter, William, Rachel and Sarah.  He was the fourth oldest of the seven children.
