William's father was Job Stocks and his mother was Sarah Brigg.  His paternal grandparents were Benjamin Stocks and Sarah Cliffe. He had two sisters named Eliza and Sarah.  He was the second oldest of the three children. He had two half-brothers and four half-sisters, named Edward, Thomas, Caroline, Ann, Charlotte and Betty.  He died at the age of 46 in December 1857 in Huddersfield.²
