William was born in 1853 in Berry Brow.1  William's father was Charles Stocks and his mother was Hannah (Ann) Boothroyd.  His paternal grandparents were George Stocks and Martha Stocks. He had three brothers and two sisters, named George, Thomas, Henry, Martha and Ellen.  He was the youngest of the six children.
