Samuel's father was Benjamin Stocks and his mother was Sarah Cliffe.  His paternal grandparents were David Stocks and Sarah Brook. He had three brothers and five sisters, named Mathew, Benjamin, Job, Ann, Jinny, Sally, Hannah and Bathey.  He was the third oldest of the nine children.  He died before 1841 in Huddersfield.
