Elizabeth's father was John Settle and her mother was Betty Mather. Her maternal grandparents were Martin Madther and Sarah Kirkman. She had four brothers and three sisters, named Peter, John, Michael, Richard, Nancy, Alice and Alice. She was the youngest of the eight children.
