William was born in 1833 in Leigh and his baptism took place on September 8th, 1833 at St. Mary-the-Virgin (Leigh).1  William's father was John Rigby and his mother was Margaret Gaskel. He had four brothers and four sisters, named John, Peter, James, Samuel, Sarah, Mary, Margaret and Ann.  He was the sixth oldest of the nine known children.
