William's father was Joseph Ramsden and his mother was Martha Haslam.  His maternal grandparents were William Haslam and Ann Roscoe. He had six brothers and a sister, named John, James, Thomas, Joseph, Samuel, John and Priscilla.  He was the fourth oldest of the eight known children.  He died at the age of 58 in 1891.
