Esther was born in 1849 in Darcy Lever and her baptism took place on September 30th, 1849 at St. Peter's (Bolton).1 2  Esther's father was Joshua Kirkman and her mother was Betty (Elizabeth) Openshaw Greenhalgh. She had a sister named Sarah.  She was the older of the two children. She had two half-brothers and three half-sisters, named John, James, Ann, Ellen and Mary.
