Mary's father was Martin Anthony O'Flaherty and her mother was Cicely Sherlock. Her maternal grandparents were Thomas Sherlock and Mary Ann Quigley. She had a brother and a sister, named Denis and Clara. She was the second oldest of the three children. She died at the age of 86 in 2014 in Birkenhead.²
