Thomas' father was William Moses and his mother was Hannah Brereton. His paternal grandparents were Aaron Moses and Eliza Edwards; his maternal grandparents were William Brereton and Elizabeth Brockley. He had three brothers and a sister, named John, George, Frederick and Margaret. He was the second oldest of the five known children.
