Edward was born in 1819 in Bolton.1  Edward's father was Nathan Monks and his mother was Jane Mather.  His maternal grandparents were Samuel Mather and Ellen Green. He had two brothers and a sister, named James, John and Mary.  He was the oldest of the four known children.
