William was born in November 1834 in Bolton and his baptism took place on November 16th, 1834 at St. Peter's (Bolton).1  William's father was Samuel Mather and his mother was Betsey Green.  His paternal grandparents were Matthias Mather and Mary Priestley. He had five brothers and a sister, named Matthias, Joseph, Thomas, Samuel, Charles and Mary.  He was the sixth oldest of the seven children.
