William was born in 1832 in Pendleton.1  William's father was Henry Mather and his mother was Sarah (Sally) Swindels.  His paternal grandparents were James Topping and Alice Mather. He had six brothers and four sisters, named James, Levi, Joseph, Andrew, John, Peter, Molly, Mally, Alice and Mary. He had two adopted brothers named Henry and James.
