Thomas was born on December 9th, 1833 in Whitefield and his baptism took place on January 26th, 1834 at St. Mary-the-Virgin (Prestwich).1  Thomas' father was Samuel Mather and his mother was Charlotte Jones.  His paternal grandparents were Thomas Mather and Esther Barlow. He had four brothers and a sister, named James, John, Samuel, Richard and Esther.  He was the oldest of the six children.
