Thomas' father was Charles Mather and his mother was Ann Dewhurst.  His paternal grandparents were Thomas Mather and Hannah (Ann) Kirkham. He had three brothers and three sisters, named (William), Edmund, Robert, Mary, Margaret and Emily.  He was the third oldest of the seven children.  He died as an infant in September 1874 at Egerton.¹
