Stephen was born on September 22nd, 1806 in Bolton and his baptism took place on December 25th, 1808 in Dukes Alley Chapel (NC).1  Stephen's father was James Mather and his mother was Ellen Mercer.  His paternal grandparents were William Greshon and Elizabeth Mather. He had six brothers named Stephen, James, James, Martha, Martha and Jno.  He was the third youngest of the seven children.

‌Stephen and Jane were married in a religious ceremony on August 24th, 1834 at Manchester Cathedral.4
