Sarah was born in September 1857. Sarah's father was John Mather and her mother was Alice Whittle.  Her paternal grandparents were Thomas Mather and Alice Bradshaw. She had two brothers and four sisters, named Thomas, James, Elizabeth, Betsy, Edith and Fanny.  She was the oldest of the seven children.
