Samuel was born in June 1798 in Radcliffe and his baptism took place on June 24th, 1798 at St. Mary (Radcliffe).¹

Samuel's father was John Mather and his mother was Alice Mather. His paternal grandparents were James Mather and Mary Pendlebury. He had three brothers and three sisters, named James, Peter, Richard, Martha, Mary and Alice. He was the fifth oldest of the seven children. He died at the age of 73 in July 1871 in Radcliffe. His burial was on July 3rd, 1871 at St. Mary (Radcliffe).²³

- In 1831, son John of Samuel and Ellen Mather of Little Lever, Shoe Maker was baptised.
  
  In 1836, brothers James and Peter Mather (and Samuel Mather) had freehold houses and spring at Church Street, Radcliffe.
  
  In 1841, Samuel Mather (41) was a Shoemaker at Church Strert, Radcliffe. He had a son John (9). His brother Peter Mather (48) an organist was a neighbour. Oldest brother James was also a Shoe Maker at Sion Street, Radcliffe.
  
  On 2 May 1850, Samuel, 48, a widower and Boot and Shoe Maker, son of John Mather a Boot and Shoe Manufacturer married Elizabeth Barlow at Manchester, St Mary.
  
  In 1851, Samuel Mather (52) was still at Church Street, with wife Elizabeth (40) and son John (20, labourer) at Radcliffe.
  
  In 1861, Samuel and Elizabeth (62 & 50) were at Spring Lane, Radcliffe with son John (32) and daughter Alice (8).
  
  In 1871, Samuel and Elizabeth (71 & 61) were still at 69 Spring Lane, Radcliffe with their daughter Alice (18)
  
  Samuel died end June 1871, aged 72
