Richard was born in October 1834 in Billinge and his baptism took place on October 26th, 1834 at St. Aidan (Billinge).1  Richard's father was Thomas Mather and his mother was Anne. He had a brother and a sister, named William and Ellen.  He was the second oldest of the three children.
