May was born in 1824 in Blackburn and her baptism took place on February 29th, 1824.1 2  May's father was Matthew Mather and her mother was Jane Taylor.  Her paternal grandparents were Nathan Mather and Jane (Jenny) Birchenhead. She had four brothers and three sisters, named William, Thomas, Matthew, John, Jane, Alice and Eliza.  She was the second oldest of the eight children.
