Matilda's father was John Frederick Mather and her mother was Ann Bennett.  Her paternal grandparents were Robert Mather and Sarah. She had three brothers and two sisters, named Robert, Frederick, Charles, Ann and Isabella.  She was the oldest of the six children. She had three half-brothers and two half-sisters, named Robert, John, Henry, Sarah and Alice.
