Mary's father was James Mather and her mother was Esther Pasquill (Pasquell). Her paternal grandparents were Richard Mather and Elizabeth Buckley. She had five brothers and two sisters, named James, William, Richard, John, Samuel, Elizabeth and Martha. She was the youngest of the eight children.
