Mary's father was Alfred Mather and her mother was Emma Beswick.  Her paternal grandparents were David Mather and Esther Heaton. She had four brothers and two sisters, named Henry, William, Alfred, Joseph, Esther and Gertrude.  She was the second oldest of the seven children.  She died at the age of 86 in October 1971 in Bolton.²
