Mary was born in September 1853 in Hazel Grove.1  Mary's father was Thomas Mather and her mother was Margaret Shelmerdine.  Her paternal grandparents were James Mather and Mary Barber. She had four brothers and two sisters, named John, Robert, James, William, Nancy and Margaret.  She was the second youngest of the seven known children.
