Mary was born on April 28th, 1824 in Whitefield and her baptism took place on July 4th, 1824 at St. Mary-the-Virgin (Prestwich). Mary's father was Peter Taylor Mather and her mother was Alice Rothwell.  Her paternal grandparents were James Taylor and Rachel Madther. She had two brothers and a sister, named Samuel, James and Ann.  She was the oldest of the four known children.
