Ruth, Martha, John and Ellen were not baptised but died and are buried at Westhoughton. After them, Alice and Ellen were baptised at Blackrod, with abode shown as Westhoughton. Edward and Ruth were married at Deane and the years born (calculated from death ages), form a sequence approx 2 years apart. It is therefore likely all four all children of Edward and Ruth from Deane.

In 1841, Martha Mather (35), with her three children Allan, Betty and Ellen were living on Rogers Farm (Westhoughton) with her mother Ruth (60).
21 April 1863 daughter Betty Mather (29) of Westhoughton, daughter of Charles Pennington a farmer married Luke Southers, son of George, both farmers. It is assumed that all the children Betty and earlier are Charles Penningtons.
