Maria was born on March 16th, 1841 in Manchester and her baptism took place on December 26th, 1841 at Manchester Cathedral.1  Maria's father was James Mather and her mother was Maria Yates.  Her paternal grandparents were Thomas Matther and Sarah Hall. She had three brothers and two sisters, named Thomas, William, Isaac, Sarah and Elizabeth.  She was the youngest of the six children.  She died at the age of 1 in September 1842 in Manchester.2
