Lily's father was William Henry Mather and her mother was Alice McDonna.  Her paternal grandparents were William Pickup and Harriet Horrocks. She had four brothers and a sister, named James, George, William, Thomas and Helena.  She was the oldest of the six children.  She died at the age of 60 in June 1954 in Horwich.²
