Lillian's father was Edwin Mather and her mother was Sarah Stones. Her paternal grandparents were William Mather and Martha Tyldesley. She had four brothers and three sisters, named John, Edwin, Samuel, Charles, Martha, Mary and Florence. She was the youngest of the eight children.
