Joseph was born in 1870 in Bradshaw and his baptism took place on April 24th, 1870 at St. Anne (Turton).1 2  Joseph's father was Charles Mather and his mother was Betty Crompton.  His paternal grandparents were Edward Mather and Ann Brambley. He had three brothers and three sisters, named Henry, John, Charles, Rachel, Mary and Hannah.  He was the third youngest of the seven children.  He died before 1922.
