Joseph was born in December 1837 in Manchester.1  Joseph's father was Joseph Mather and his mother was Mary Gullan. He had a brother and a sister, named James and Mary.  He was the oldest of the three children.  He died at the age of 3 in September 1841 in Bolton.2
