Joseph was born in 1858 in Manchester.1  Joseph's father was Thomas Mather and his mother was Ellen McCardle.  His paternal grandparents were John (Mechanic) Mather and Ann Thompson. He had two brothers and two sisters, named John, James, Emma and Eliza.  He was the oldest of the five children.
