Joseph was born in 1870 in Atherton.1  Joseph's father was Edward Mather and his mother was Elizabeth Owen.  His paternal grandparents were Geffrey (Jeffery) Mather and Catherine Gregory. He had four brothers and two sisters, named John, James, Thomas, William, Eliza and Betsy.  He was the third oldest of the seven children. He had a half-brother and a half-sister, named John and Martha.
