Joseph was born in 1763 in Manchester and his baptism took place on January 18th, 1763 in Cross Street (Presbyterian).1  Joseph's father was John Mather and his mother was Mary. He had three brothers and four sisters, named Samuel, Benjamin, Richard, Hannah, Elizabeth, Elizabeth and Elizabeth.  He was the third youngest of the eight known children.
