John was born in December 1896 in Bolton.1  John's father was John Mather and his mother was Clara Turner.  His paternal grandparents were Thomas Mather and Catherine Lawton. He had four brothers and seven sisters, named Thomas, James, Joshua, Stanley, Clara, Gertrude, Maud, Margaret, Ethel, Florence and Gladys.  He was the sixth oldest of the twelve children.  He died as an infant in December 1896 in Bolton.2
