John was born in 1821 in Droylsden.  John's father was William Mather and his mother was Jane Biggarstaff. He had four brothers and five sisters, named Abraham, William, Thomas, James, Margaret, Anne, Alice, Sarah and Betty.  He was the third oldest of the ten children.
