John was born in 1816 in Little Hulton.1  John's father was James Thornley (Mather) and his mother was Margaret (Peggy) Mather.  His paternal grandparents were Ellis Mather and Ann Thornley. He had two brothers and three sisters, named Thomas, Ellis, Betty, Caroline and Harriet.  He was the second oldest of the six children.
