John's father was Ellis Mather and his mother was Matilda Edge. His paternal grandparents were John Mather and Martha Adcroft. He had two brothers and a sister, named Clifford, Moses and Lily. He died at the age of 75 on May 21st, 1952 in Tong Moore.²
