John was born in February 1775 in Kearsley and his baptism took place on February 26th, 1775 at St. Saviour (Ringley).¹²

  John's baptism record of 1774 shows "John Son of Ann Eckersley of Kersley by John Mather". They were later married at St Mary, Deane.

John's father was John Mather and his mother was Ann Eckersley. His paternal grandparents were John Mather and <unknown>. He had five brothers and three sisters, named Bould, Bury, Otho, Mary, Thomas, Rachel, Rachel and Ann. He was the oldest of the nine children. He died at the age of 75 on September 8th, 1850 in Bolton. His burial was on September 11th, 1850 at St. Mary (Deane).³⁴
