Jeffrey, known as Geoffrey, was born in April 1861 in Westhoughton.1  Geoffrey's father was William Mather and his mother was Margaret Smith.  His paternal grandparents were Geffrey (Jeffery) Mather and Catherine Gregory. He had four brothers and four sisters, named John, Edward, Geoffrey, William, Catherine, Ann, Ann and Margaret.  He was the youngest of the nine children.
