James was born on January 14th, 1881 in Radcliffe and his baptism took place on May 18th, 1881 at St. Thomas (Radcliffe).1 2  James' father was James Mather and his mother was Mary Hellwood.  His paternal grandparents were Joseph Davenport and Mary Ann Mather. He had a brother and four sisters, named Joseph, Sarah, Mary, Martha and Mary.  He was the second youngest of the six children.
