James was born in December 1846 in Bolton.1  James' father was Isaac Mathers and his mother was Esther Kershaw.  His paternal grandparents were Samuel Mather and Ann Williams. He had three brothers named Samuel, William and Robert. He had an adopted sister named Sarah.
