James was born in 1836 in Little Hulton and his baptism took place on September 4th, 1836 in Horwich.1 2  James' father was Joshua Grundy and his mother was Betty Mather.  His maternal grandparents were James Thornley (Mather) and Margaret (Peggy) Mather. He had four brothers and seven sisters, named Thomas, Joseph, Robert, William, Ann, Sarah, Mary, Ellen, Alice, Martha and Sarah.  He was the second oldest of the twelve children.
