James was born in February 1840 in Bury.1  James' father was James Mather and his mother was Sarah Butterworth.  His paternal grandparents were James Mather and Mary Evans. He had five brothers and a sister, named Robert, Richard, Edwin, David, Samuel and Betty. He had an adopted sister named Mary.
