In 1841, James was recorded as a publican (40) in DeansGate, with his wife "Matty" (30), Sarah Nightingale (25, F.F.), John Yeoman (20, a Hatter) and William Coonnaly (30, Irish). He had presumably taken over the Inn from Matty's father William Horrocks in 1840 when he married Matty. Two years later, both Matty and her father died.
In 1845, James Mather (Widow, son of John a Shop Keeper), manufacturer of Halliwell, married Hannah Isherwood (Widower).
Aged 49 in 1851, a Cotton Manufacturer from Little Bolton.
Now married to Hannah (born 1814 from Edgworth). From Little Bolton and a Cotton Manufacturer, employingh 65 men.
In 1861, James, a Counterpane Manufacturer and Hannah (59 & 46) were at 14 Falcon Street, Little Bolton with John (16) and Nancy (15).
