James' father was Edward Mather and his mother was Ann Brambley.  His paternal grandparents were Thomas Mather and Alice Entwistle. He had an adopted sister named Mally.  He died at the age of 2 in February 1821 in Tottington.  He was buried on March 2nd, 1821 at St. Anne (Turton).²
