Jack was born in 1922 in Turton.1  Jack's father was William Mather and his mother was Elizabeth Copping.  His paternal grandparents were Joseph Mather and Margaret Holt. He had four brothers and a sister, named Frederick, William, Harry, Gerald and Ether.  He was the third youngest of the six children.
