Henry's father was Henry Mather and his mother was Martha Garey.  His paternal grandparents were Henry Mather and Mary Howarth. He had two brothers and five sisters, named William, Richard, Sarah, Betsy, Martha, Mary and Margaret.  He was the fourth oldest of the eight children.
